Oh my! The day following the post Hitting the Jackpot, I got this text message from cell phone number +639098738536 that went, “Congratulations! Pres. GMA CHARITY FUND.Ur Sim #had Won! (sic) 750,000.00.last, 01/31/2009 > 2nd prize winner, 4 more info?Pls call me now! I’m Atty. James Z. Morales.”
My first impulse was to text back, “How did you get admitted to law school, much less graduate and pass the bar? Your grammar is atrocious!”. but I didn’t do it. Instead, I answered, “I didn’t enter any contest. Take me off your mailing list.”, and as an afterthought, wrote, “
... all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. -Revelation 21:8
People will tell you lies about the ultimate prize – eternal life – as well. You can be duped because the men who present these lies as truths claim to be men of God. Some religions will hinder you from reading about the truth as well. They will also tell you to do good works to keep in good standing with God – much like the Atty. Moraleses or whatever pseudonym they use, who, after you call them, will have you send them money via Western Union to secure your share in the jackpot. But, as the Bible says, good works can not merit your salvation.
8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast. 10For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. – Ephesians 2:8-10
If you receive any teaching about God or how you can get into His kingdom, always go back to the Bible to check if it holds water. Traditions are man-made, but the Bible is infallible truth and transcends culture.
